Time: 1:00 - 3:00 PM

Description: Are you an educator who wants more tools to engage adult students to reflect and take action on the racial, social, and economic justice issues affecting their lives and communities? Do you have parents of school-age children in your programs who are navigating remote learning and DOE policies? As part of the Literacy & Justice Initiative (LJI), the Literacy Assistance Center (LAC) has teamed up with the NYC Coalition for Educational Justice to host this online Teach-In for adult education teachers and staff who want to learn more about current education justice organizing campaigns and how to integrate related themes into adult education programs. This session will include an overview of the Racially Just Public Schools platform and the Literacy & Justice Call for Transformative Action to expand adult education in NYC. Participants will learn more about Culturally Responsive-Sustaining Education (CRSE) and CEJ’s Liberation School and reflect on ways to apply the principles to adult education and to support adult students (and staff) who are also parents. CEJ leaders will share a powerful collection of tools that they’ve developed for this work. Teachers/staff will leave with new ideas and resources to bring education justice themes into their programs and to connect their students to new opportunities. This is part of a growing area of LAC work to support adult educators to engage and inspire their students to take action on issues that are important to them. Join us!
